The only difference it that it is no longer the crowned heads of Europe setting policy, but the technocrat managers of large corporations, financial institutions, and the political class. The rising concerns about inequity—shown in Occupy Wall Street, the Arab Spring, and the rewriting of the constitution in Iceland—are an echo of the early rise of anticolonial insurgents. Populist groups will argue against the entrenched power of the the global financial order, and will ultimately elect governments that take control back, and decrease the sway of global neoliberalism.”

- Stowe Boyd, at Fast Company (via thesmithian)

How Gildan drew the cost-cutting line at its factory in Bangladesh

How Gildan drew the cost-cutting line at its factory in Bangladesh:
Montreal-based company spent nearly $1-million reinforcing the structure of its factory near Dhaka

I cannot believe brands like Gildan are getting praised by anyone. To pretend they have any sort of corporate responsibility is complete bullshit. They just own their factories vertically, and with all of the garment worker industry exposure in the past year, they don’t want their reputation tarnished. They won’t be able to escape the responsibility as easily as brands who subcontract work to factories who produce for multiple brands. Also, their monitoring party, the FLA, is a facade. They repeatedly release bogus reports and are funded by the brands who pay them.

I have heard and met garment workers personally, who all assure Gildan is one of the worst brands to work for. Horrible working conditions and physical and verbal abuse of workers, and denied access to workers’ rights. And then people in America read articles like this and are confused and misguided about how companies like Gildan treat their workers.

Complete propaganda, please be analytical about anything you hear/read about the garment industry.

Audio

Saw the awesomest ironically gruesomest most ominous symbol today. On our way to Wag-a-bag (Talia, Ana S, Jesus and I) Ana pointed out a dead bird by the trashcan. I could not find it and asked several times where she had seen it. I don’t know why I have such an infatuation with dead things, maybe it’s the calmness of a motiveless organism just lying there. And also the curiosity in me that wonders if a soul does exist, has that beings soul stayed or left its body, and if it has left, where has it flown to. I eventually found the bird by Ana’s directions, on the rim of the metal trashcan. There it lay, and without even thinking about it I raised it by its tailfeathers and chased Ana with it (she sees dead birds everywhere, and a part of me knew she would be terrified, I also have little respect for the dead evidently). Turns out yes she was terrified and she sprinted away as I threatened to throw the dead bird at her. I threw it to the side without a thought and tried to apologize to Ana, she was kinda peeved at me. I was just playin. I thought it was funny. But I guess some ppl find dead stuff scary or unsanitary. Anyways, the most interesting part was what we saw when we looked at it again. Well, really when I looked at it again, they glanced but I wanted to look at it. It was a mockingbird. And apparently, how you kill a mockingbird, is by ripping its ribcage open and taking out its heart (the heart had probably been eaten by some animal or other bugs). It was split down the belly, with maggots weaving in and out the flesh that was left (there was still a good amount). They were so alive, writhing and searching and full of motives, while the bird was still dead. And still more interesting, by accident or on purpose (I don’t know how that could of happened, if so, by an extremely motivated living individual) there was a paper stuck to the bird. About 7” by 4”. It was sort of ripped in half, a white paper. With either side glued, matted to the bird’s gray feathers with it’s own dried blood. The paper had a head line and a short 3 paragraph story below it. The headline read: “Psychotherapist’s Soul Healed”, and went on to tell the story of a man who lived in the Soviet Union, named Kasparovitch, who used to be an atheist, but after finding the Lord was saved and fulfilled. The horror in the bird’s facial expression to which it was glued to suggested otherwise. And you know, I know that it was a mere accident, and also a coincidence that we even found it. That makes it all the more unsettling, doesn’t it? I mean what does that say about death? It is ugly, but out of your death comes life, and perhaps even a joke? Or, when you die a horrendous death some religious fanatic out there will connect to god saving you? I’d like to believe the former. Unfortunately it’s probably a little of both.

I wonder what it’s last thought was, it’s last motive. The last thing that bird found important. I want to go back and rip the evangelicism right off it’s down feathered chest. It makes me angry in a way. How can death, such a beautiful and peaceful state be mocked and twisted into this idea of eternal life after? So you never die? Is that it? You never die or at least transition to something else ever. Ever in the history of everything? You stay a human forever, you have this body, this cage forever? Well rip my ribcage open and steal my heart if that’s the case. Let my soul wander elsewhere, I’d much prefer ceasing to exist in any way than living forever. How monotonous.

Blastphemy:::::winenights:::::supposedtobestudying:::butimstudyinglife

Why do people who believe strongly in something intangible, feel the need to convince others around them to think exactly like them? Does it frighten them? The possibility of their intangible beliefs being challenged. Or are they so well-trained that they truly believe they are doing a good deed, in fact helping me, by blastphemizing my thought process? Which, might I add, actually required…thought.

Physical Geography: William E. Doolittle --- Check Dams in Pre-historic Southwest

This article is talking about these things called “check dams”. They are basically mini-dams made with rocks used on tributaries (lil baby streams) that flowed through farmland. The area Doolittle studied used to be inhabited by The Mogollon around 1000 AD. So he’s trying to figure out the fxn of these lil dams.

They were formed in series along the streams. And also in terraces (basically big stair-steps). Terracing is a common around the world for growing food. A lot of other geographers had thought the check dams were there for the purpose of creating a terrace (stair step), where food could then be grown, and had water flowing through it.

Doolittle say nu uhhh. (um, no). He followed where the small streams would have ended up, and they empty out into clearings. The clearings are called “cienegas”. They have great soil, and would have been great for farming. Upstream from the cienegas is woodlands.

Okay so, all of this is happening on a big slope. The woodlands are on really steep slopes, the cienegas are on a little flatter land. So what would have happened, is that water would have flowed super fast through the woodlands (since they are steep) and then slowed down on the flatter cienegas. As the water flows, especially when it flows fast, it picks up a lot of dirt. When the streams slow down on the cienegas, they drop off two things: water (duhz) and dirt.

This would have created a swampy area with a lot of random dirt build up (let’s call it…sediment?) on the cienegas. Not cool if that is where all your crops are. You don’t want that shit getting flooded and having sediment spilled all over your lil baby crops trying to make it. So Doolittle noticed the check dams being upstream from the cienegas. He thought, which I think is pretty commonsensical and smart, that the “check dams” were there not to create farmland on terraces (as other geographers thought) but to protect farmland further downstream. Protect the cienegas. They would slow down the water flow, as dams do. Slowing down the water flow was good because…

A) less sediment is picked up by streams and so, less is also dropped off

B) the water flows more slowly, giving the cienegas more time to drain, and less flooding would occur

C) sediment (the dirt) would actually build up behind the check dams. Kinda like when you try to throw a bunch of food in your sink, and it just builds up behind the drain all nasty like. And the more food that is there, the less water that goes down the drain right? Saaaaame thing for the build up of sediment behind check dams

Pretty cool right? The more the check dams are in use, the more they slow down water. Which is what they set out to do in the first place. And people figured this shit out hundreds and hundreds of years ago. Looks like we got something to learn. Cool!
